Harmony in Design: The Authentic Tale of House of Hackney and the Unique Flair of Home

“feminine but fierce”

Frieda Gormley

House of Hackney, a beacon of luxury in interior design, has transcended trends, guided solely by its founders' unyielding creative instincts. Founded by Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle in 2011, the brand stands out for its British-made treasures that reimagine traditional designs with a fresh perspective. Frieda and Javvy, form a dynamic partnership that has reshaped the landscape of contemporary interiors.

Inspired by the ornate beauty of Victorian aesthetics and the timeless legacy of William Morris, House of Hackney's prints burst with a vibrant array of colors. These hues, drawn from the duo's keen observations of the world around them, reflect a commitment to individuality and eschew conventional palettes. The brand's prints, though renowned, are just one facet of its creative vision—colour, in all its nuanced glory, takes center stage, contributing to the distinctive House of Hackney ambiance.

January 2021 marked a milestone for the brand as it attained B Corporation certification, acknowledging House of Hackney's unwavering dedication to social and environmental responsibility. This recognition resonates with the brand's ethos of transparency and accountability, setting new standards in an industry ripe for change.

Beyond interiors, House of Hackney has ventured into iconic spaces like the legendary nightclub Annabel's. Frieda and Javvy orchestrated a transformation, introducing a new pattern inspired by flora and fauna, infusing the venue with a tropical allure reminiscent of the 1950s.

Yet, at the heart of House of Hackney's success lies an unwavering commitment to authenticity. In the words of Frieda and Javvy, "We don't look at any trends. We trust our own creative senses and we're inspired by our environment." Their creative wellspring draws from the everyday, be it a passerby on the street donning a captivating color or the eclectic hues found in nature. Colour, a hallmark of House of Hackney's identity, isn't just about prints; it's a carefully curated ambiance, often laced with a touch of rebellion—grey tones added to colors to impart a subtle, intriguing edge.

They commented that since the day their House was built, a sense of compassion for people and the planet has served as the foundation of everything they do. Our House was built on the three guiding principles of creativity, compassion, and community. These principles form the moral compass that steers House of Hackney towards a future where aesthetics and ethics converge, ensuring that every creation embodies not just style, but a commitment to a better, more harmonious world.

As the journey of House of Hackney unfolds, its influence extends beyond the realms of interior design, weaving into the fabric of everyday life. Inspired by the brand's commitment to authenticity, Jonathan and I have embraced this ethos in both business and our home. Unapologetically authentic, our creations embody a distinctive style that may not cater to everyone's taste, yet we stand firm in our commitment to being true to ourselves. This authenticity is not just a design philosophy but a way of life, reflected in every choice made for our business and home. Balancing professionalism with a touch of irreverent fun, we believe in the harmonious marriage of the two—a synergy that not only defines House of Hackney but also adds a unique flair to our endeavors. In a world where individuality is celebrated, we continue to chart a course that is as bold and genuine as the prints that grace our creations, ensuring that the legacy of House of Hackney remains a testament to the enduring beauty of authenticity.

In the realm of personal taste, it's fascinating to note the delightful interplay between minimalism and maximalism. While Jonathan leans towards the minimalist aesthetic, I proudly embrace a maximalist approach in our respective homes. What's intriguing is that, despite these stylistic differences, our tastes are remarkably aligned—quirky, fun, and brimming with personality. Jonathan's space exudes a refined simplicity, allowing each element to breathe, while my home boasts a slightly fuller and more eclectic ambiance, adorned with a curated collection that some might describe as wonderfully cluttered. It's a testament to the diverse expressions of individual style, where the common thread of uniqueness binds our homes together in a celebration of personal flair and authenticity.
